Reader's note

Silas Marner tells the tale of a poor weaver who is a promising young member of a Puritan religious community. However when his best friend frames him for stealing some coins Silas’s life takes a dark turn. It contains three short stories all depicting different characters. - As for the clergyman, Mr. Gilfil, an excellent old gentleman, who smoked very long pipes and preached very short sermons, I must not speak of him, or I might be tempted to tell the story of his life, which had its little romance, as most lives have between the ages of teetotum and tobacco. - needless to say, George Eliot did write his love story within this short story collection.
