Reader's note

A wonderful copy of George Eliot’s Scenes of Clerical Life. George Eliot’s first published work is a set of three stories relating to three different clergymen in a Midlands town. The Sad Fortunes of the Rev. Amos Barton is a tragic tale of the pious Rev. Barton, who is not accepted by his new congregation, and how the premature death of his selfless wife affects him. Mr Gilfil’s Love-Story tells of Maynard Gilfil’s unrequited love for Caterina Sarti. Janet’s Repentance is the story of the town in religious divide, where an Evangelical minister helps the wife of his main opposition through her domestic abuse and alcohol dependence. These sad stories of ordinary men and women are told with compassionate honesty and acceptance of human weakness.
