Reader's note

J.B.Priestley has written of F. Scott Fitzgerald: ‘In his own fashion this notorious playboy of the Jazz Age was one of our religious writers. And unlike most previous writers he happened to have beautiful talent. It includes, this, talent, an unusually sharp eye for a schartro and a scene, a marvellous ear for dialogue, one of the finest prose styles in contemporary fiction, an uncommonly acute sense of time and place, and an unforced and easy and very economical power of what I can only call symbolic effect.’ The title story in this collection is his best short work is a symbolic fairy tale about unlimited wealth, while May Day, another early piece, crystallises the atmosphere of New York after the First World War. The other stories printed here are The Cut Glass Bowl, The Rich Boy, An Alcoholic Case, The Lees of Happiness and Crazy Sunday, a Hollywood overture to The Last Tycoon.
