Reader's note

A wonderful copy of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. Frederic Henry is an American paramedic and ambulance driver who is volunteering on the Italian front of the First World War where he falls in love with nurse Catherine Barkley. During a chaotic retreat he witnesses the arbitrary punishment handed out by the military police and deserts, fearing for his life. In one of Hemingway’s most celebrated novels, he recounts with brutal honesty the harsh realities of war and the actions of people caught in it. “There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery. In the dark it was like summer lightning, but the nights were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming.”
