A delightful addition to any book lover’s collection. First published, irregularly, in eight instalments, between December 1851 and May 1853, in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Charles Dickens. It was then published, with minor revision, in book form in 1853. This work has no real plot, but is a collection of satirical sketches, which sympathetically portray changing small-town customs and values in mid Victorian England.  ‘Cranford is the type of small town where everyone knows everything about everyone else. It is also a place with a set social hierarchy presided over by a group of older women whose word about etiquette is law. One of the younger women in the town, Mary Smith, is the narrator of the book and she manages to keep abreast of all of the town happenings even when she is out of town because her friends write to her and give her all of the up to date information.’","brand":"Country House Library","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55954214519163,"sku":"10676789","price":11.75,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2458\/8207\/files\/orig_492338_jpg.jpg?v=1764331828","url":"https:\/\/countryhouselibrary.co.uk\/products\/cranford-by-elizabeth-gaskell-nelson-c1909","provider":"Country House Library ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
