Reader's note

The beginning on the 1914 War found Leading-Seaman Albert Brown at Singapore, aboard H.M.S. Charybdis, a third-class cruiser, one of the few scattered units faced with the task of hunting down a powerful German naval squadron wreaking havoc with merchant shipping in the Pacific. True to the tradition of the Royal Navy, Charybdis went down fighting against her much more powerful adversary, the German armoured cruiser, Ziethen, and fate decreed that Leading-Seaman Brown should be one of the two survivors taken aboard the damaged German ship as she set off to lick her wounds in the shelter of the small island in the Galapagos, Resolution Island.
