Reader's note
This lovely green pocket edition of Anne Brontë’s Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey would make a lovely addition to a home library. Anges Grey tells the story of when Agnes’s family becomes impoverished after a disastrous financial speculation, Agnes Grey determines to find work as a governess in order to contribute to their meagre income and assert her independence. But her enthusiasm is swiftly extinguished as she struggles with the unmanageable children of English gentry; the only kindness she receives comes from Mr Weston, the sober young curate. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is framed as a series of letters from Gilbert Markham to his friend about the events connected with his meeting a mysterious young widow, calling herself Helen Graham, who arrives at Wildfell Hall, an Elizabethan mansion which has been empty for many years, with her young son and a servant.
