"During the reign of the Empress Catherine, in 1783, the Crimea became Russian territory. Prior to this, her great naval arsenal was at Nicolaieff, on the river Bug.

The Crimea is separated from the Continent of Europe by the Isthmus of Perekop, which is five and a half miles in breadth. This Isthmus is strongly fortified by a deep ditch, and a high wall, which extends from the Gulf or Karkinite to the Putrid Sea. On this there are several heavily armed fortresses..."
