Reader's note

Professor Williamson provides a clear and most illuminating commentary pm Eliot’s poetry which is, at the same time, an introduction to modern poetry techniques. His book is refreshingly free from ‘cult-worship’, and he insists that it should be read in conjunction with (and not in lieu of) Eliot’s poetry. To facilitate ease of reference the poem-by-poem analysis are in chronological order. The author makes clear many apparent obscurities which have, in the past, been responsible for Eliot’s reputation as a difficult poet, and shows that although his verse may at times appear irrational and incoherent, he is always master of his art. This is a unique read and would be wonderful for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of T.S. Eliot's works.
