Reader's note

No one has written about the actual and imaginative experiences of children more simply and directly than Robert Louis Stevenson. Bed in Summer expresses that wistful reluctance to leave the pleasant out-of-doors ‘when all the sky is clear and blue’ for bed, which all children feel, even though they may not now in winter get up by ‘yellow candlelight’. Autumn Fires conveys a child’s enthusiasm for each new season as the year advances. And how undertaking of childhood’s pleasures are poems like The Swing, Where go the Boats?, My Treasures and Travels. This is a complex text, taken from the first edition and is illustrated with drawings by Margery Gill.
