Reader's note

This is a wonderful copy of Under the Greenwood Tree or The Mellstock Quire. Thomas Hardy’s gentlest and most optimistic novel is the first one he sets in Wessex, a location he returns to repeatedly in his later and more famous (and more tragic) works. This pleasant romance story concerns church musician Dick Dewey and his love for Fancy Day, the new schoolmistress, who’s beauty has attracted the eyes of several suitors. Entwined in this narrative is the touching description of a musical tradition waning and slowly being replaced. With dark green covers, this is a lovely classic story that would make a wonderful addition to any library shelf.
