Reader's note

A lovely vintage edition of the classic, The Ballad of Reading Gaol, in a thin, brown hardcover. The 109-stanza poem was written by Wilde while in exile, following his two-year imprisonment. It narrates the execution of a prisoner and the brutal treatment and awful conditions that the inmates had to suffer through. ‘Yet each man kills the thing he loves / By each let this be heard. / Some do it with a bitter look, / Some with a flattering word. / The coward does it with a kiss, / The brave man with a sword!’
