'In medieval times, it is apparent from old records, that the contents of the gardens of that period were largely drawn from our indigenous flora, and the careful cultivation of these simple flowers was the chief object of those days. Lady cecil has recorded that the earliest known list of garden plants by a practical gardener, and not, as was the prevailing custom of those early years of our horticultural history, a culinary or medical work, was a work transcribed, and it was printed by the Society of Antiquaries in 1896.'
