Reader's note

John Steinbeck’s writings are always a classy and welcome addition to any bookshelf; This book in particular acts as a perfect introduction to Steinbeck’s work and soul as a writer. Tackling issues key both to Steinbeck’s future works and also issues that concerned him most as an author. These stories set in the idyllic but rural Salinas Valley in California follow simple people toiling away at farms and struggling to find a place for themselves in the world. Typical of Steinbeck, these stories work as an analysis of the social constructs present at the time and each character represents a larger idea, feeling or group of people.
