Reader's note

This King Penguin offers a beautifully designed and illustrated history of the University of Cambridge--the perfect gift for all lovers of classic literature and out of print Penguin books available on our vintage bookstore!

'The plates of Ackermann's Cambridge as they stand, at least the sixty-four topographical ones, of which, alas, only less than a third could here be reproduced, would make a fairly practical guide to the University of today, for the major landmarks of Cambridge have not been altered between Ackermann's time and our own. It is true that those manifestations of the Gothic Revival which form a salient feature of the Cambridge scene today do not appear in any of our plates. Rickman's New court across the river at St. John's, and the Bridge of Sighs with which his partner Hutchinson connected it to the ancient courts were not to begin until 1826.'
