Reader's note

This Penguin Modern Classic, The Great Gatsby, is F. Scott Fitzgerald's third and most popular. The book tells the story from the perspective of Nick Carraway, who was once Gatsby's neighbour, and he tells the story sometime after 1922. The story is of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby's passion and obsession to reunite with his ex-lover, the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. He hosts lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession." We follow Jay Gatsby as he pursues his version of the American Dream. His failure to attain happiness leads the reader to believe that the moral of the story is that the American Dream is ultimately unattainable. F. Scott Fitzgerald's writings are always a classy and welcome addition to any bookshelf.
