Reader's note

This vintage pink penguin book, Two Years Before the Mast, is a memoir by the American author Richard Henry Dana Jr, having been written after a two-year sea voyage from Boston to California on a merchant ship starting in 1834. He kept a diary throughout the voyage, and after returning he wrote a recognised American classic which was published in 1840. "In the following pages I design to give an accurate and authentic narrative of a little more than two years spent as a common sailor before the mast, in the American merchant service." Enjoy another piece of classic literary history with this rare, vintage book by Richard Henry Dana Jr.
