The Best Genres to Read in Winter

Many readers determine their reading choices by the season. Summer, for example, brings the perfect weather for comedy or romance, while autumn provides a chill best accompanied by a chilling horror read. And then there's winter; the best time of the year for wrapping up indoors in front of a crackling fire with a good book in your hands, suitable for a multitude of thrilling genres all bookworms can enjoy. The coldest season is one most readers anticipate, as it provides us all with an excuse to enjoy the frosty months tucked away and buried in the pages. So, now that winter is here, we've made a short list of the best genres to get stuck into at this time of the year.

Crime and Mystery

Whether you're into Agatha Christie, Lee Child, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, or any other crime and mystery authors, it's essentially a fact that this is a genre made for the cold. After all, with cold weather come cold deeds, and you'll find no shortage of these in the many chilling mysteries and unsolved villainous acts the world of fiction (or non-fiction) crime literature has to offer! Including darker works covering murder and betrayal, or slightly less sweat-inducing mysteries for the faint of heart readers, this genre is rich with page-turners that will have you hooked from beginning to end.

And, if you're new to this genre... well, where to begin? Don't forget to browse our crime and mystery collection including renowned titles by Agatha Christie or our many Sherlock Holmes books!

Horror and Suspense

Or perhaps, as the days become shorter and the nights grow longer, you're one of those brave and hardened souls in search of something truly macabre. Horror has always been a point of call for those of us who enjoy the darkness (and all the evil things that lurk in it), and this is a genre that arguably penetrates the human soul deeper than any other - even deeper than the cold, and not in the most pleasant of ways. From modern writers such as Stephen King, the King of Horror, to classic and original horror works such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Bram Stoker's Dracula, or the many cosmic terrors of H.P. Lovecraft, there's no end to the supply of frightening thrills in the horrific realm of horror fiction!

So, if you're looking for a fright during this cold and grizzly season, remember to brave our vintage horror book collection... if you dare!

Fantasy and Adventure

Some of us, however, aren't a fan of the wind, the rain, the cold, and the snow. And that's okay. Sometimes winter can get pretty damn miserable. But even so, books can still come to the rescue for those of us longing for a brighter, warmer, drier time of the year. With a decades upon decades worth of fantastical and fascinating works, ranging from Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings to Robert E. Howard's brutal Conan the Barbarian, fantasy is the ideal genre to escape the miserable weather and explore exotic, colourful, and almost incomprehensibly vast fictional worlds. Join wonderful characters in their adventures across perilous and challenging landscapes, and discover (or remind yourself) of just how riveting the beloved genre of fantasy can be - especially as a distraction from the biting winds of winter!

Be sure to delve into our epic fantasy collection, including classic works by J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
