Reader's note

Unconditional Surrender completes Evelyn Waugh’s idly praised trilogy about the Second World War. The Church Times considered it ‘perhaps the most impressive fictional achievement of the post-war years.’ Guy Crouchback’s military career, begun so spiritedly in men at Arms, came to an unhappy climax with the defeat and withdrawal from Crete, described in Officers and Gentlemen. The Crouchback who soldiers on in Unconditional Surrender has lost his Halberdier idealism but gained in human sympathy. Two years at the London HQ of Hazardou Offensive Operations are neither hazardous nor offensive, but they offer Guy the chances of reconciliation with his former wife. Then, sent to Yugoslavia, Guy the Catholic finds himself officially aiding the Communist take-over, but unofficially ministering to a ragged little group of Jews. Moments of farce recur, but with a sharper edge. The reader, ilke Guy himself, discovers that the action and comedy of Crouchback’s war have given way to a sober awareness of its ultimate futility and harshness.
